The new Executive Director of the Howard County Historical Society will take office on February 27th.
Dave Broman is filling the position created by the resignation of Kelly Karickhoff, who left after more than 20 years of service to become Director of Development for Ivy Tech in Kokomo. Broman has a long-term commitment to HCHS, having served multiple terms as President. He has chaired the Long-Range Planning Committee, as well as the Building and Grounds, Marketing, Web Site, and Exhibits committees.
Peggy Hobson, President of the HCHS Board of Directors, commented: "When we looked at the applicants, we saw we had several people with good museum experience. When we saw that Dave was applying, we realized that museum expertise can be learned. What he has is knowledge of the organization, the community, and the people who live and work in the area. Dave already loves the historical society and it would take newcomers many years to catch to him in that race."
Dave comes to the organization following a career in broadcast media, most recently as Program Manager for WWKI Radio in Kokomo. It was through his radio work that he was first acquainted with the historical society in the late 1980's. As he tells it, he first fell in love with "the house" - the Seiberling Mansion - then grew to appreciate the history. Along with his work for the society, he has served as board president for the United Way of Howard County, the Community Foundation of Howard County, and the Haynes-Apperson Festival, and as a board member for the Kokomo-Howard County Chamber of Commerce and the Family Service Association.
"It started, for me, with the Seiberling, but really came home when I began to hear the stories," Broman said. "As you learn the stories of life in Indiana, you begin to develop a better understanding of why we live the way we live. I've come to believe that our history, as told through those stories, can strengthen our sense of community." He added that "the Seiberling isn't just a physical centerpiece of community pride, it's a place to preserve and share our heritage. I'm excited to be able to work closely with the staff and volunteers toward that end."
