10/30/2020Howard County Historical Society in Kokomo seeks a creative and curious self-starter to coordinate a new oral history project called Voices of Pandemic and Protest in Howard County. The start date is flexible (between December 2020-January 2021) for this four-month project. This initiative seeks to identify, collect and preserve stories and objects from Howard County community members that illuminate their lived experiences with the COVID-19 pandemic and/or the Black Lives Matter movement and protests. This project will provide future researchers and community members the ability to look back and understand this historic moment from a variety of perspectives.
The successful applicant will have previous experience with oral history, historic research, administrative experience and experience of fieldwork in the community. Qualitative research experience a plus. The Oral History Coordinator will be responsible for managing all aspects of the oral history project, including recruiting and training volunteers for the project. The Oral History Coordinator will report to the Executive Director and Curator of the Howard County Historical Society.

DUTIES
• Identify and recruit oral history subjects for inclusive representation of perspectives, including front line and essential workers.

• Conduct oral history interviews around subjects’ experience with pandemic and recent protests against police violence.
• Collaborate with other organizations towards conducting off-site oral history outreach.
• Recruit, train, and support a team of volunteers to help collect stories.
• Manage transcription of oral histories.
• Manage the Oral History Archive, efficiently organizing and storing the collected oral histories.
• Publicize the Oral History Project.
• Other duties at the request of the Executive Director and the Board.
QUALIFICATIONS
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Experience and education in public history or oral history preferred.
• Keen interest in and enthusiasm for history.
• The ability to take initiative and be a self-starter.
• Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills.
• Outstanding relationship-building skills.
• Proven organizational skills.

• General work schedule flexible with some weekend days.
